A synergy is a causal connection, not merely two strong Dudes on the same roster. One effect creates an event, target, Stat, or position that another effect converts into value. The best way to find synergies in How Many Dudes? is to read Ability and Relic text for repeated defined terms, then test one connection at a time.
Start with shared trigger language
Search the Dudex for phrases such as Direct Crit, Taunt, Healing, Knocked Out, Dash, Deflect, Summon, or Fatal Damage. If one Type produces the event and another Relic rewards it, the roster has a possible engine. Confirm that both texts refer to the same defined term; visual similarity is not enough.
Ninja Dude illustrates the method. Its Shuriken Throw occurs after a Direct Crit. Crit Chance therefore does two jobs: it improves critical damage frequency and creates more Shuriken triggers. A team-wide Crit effect can support Ninja while also helping other Crit-responsive Types, producing better shared value than a bonus useful to only one basic attack.
Knockout engines work differently. Undead Types and their Relics often interact with unconscious Dudes, summons, or recovery. Those effects can turn losses into output, but the roster still needs a way to avoid an irreversible cascade. A synergy that becomes impressive only after every essential Type is unconscious has no exit path.
Use adjacency as an explicit connection
Alien Dude’s Tractor Beam targets a random Dude of the Type immediately above Alien on the roster and sends that Dude toward a low-HP enemy. General Dude’s Tactical Command targets a random Dude of the Type immediately below General and makes that Dude Taunt nearby enemies. These are deterministic roster-building instructions.
Place a finisher above Alien when forced movement helps it access targets. Place a durable protector below General when that Type can survive the commanded Taunt. If the target Type changes after recruitment, update the order. The interaction is visible in the Ability text, so there is no reason to leave the result to guesswork.
The developer guide offers a more creative movement example by pairing Alien support with Samurai and a suitable Trinket. Treat it as a hypothesis about access and payoff: Alien helps deliver the Type, Samurai already pursues low-HP enemies, and the Trinket changes what the recipient does once engaged. Verify the current Trinket text before reproducing the chain.
Build around a Stat conversion
Choose one important Ability and identify the Stat that changes its trigger or payoff. For Pirate Dude, the official guide highlights Evasion and Crit Chance because they fit Pirate’s Taunt and survival behavior. For Knight Dude, Toughness and Max HP fit sustained attention. For Electrician Dude, Attack Power and Run Speed serve the discharge pattern, while late Attack Speed may contribute less after particular Relics arrive.
Then look for teammates and Family effects that provide the same Stat without abandoning their own jobs. A Stat synergy is efficient when one team-wide bonus improves the carry, protector, and support at the same time. It is inefficient when three Types accept useless Stats so one Type can reach an extreme.
Check the missing axis before committing. A Crit-heavy roster still needs guaranteed survival. An Evasion roster needs a plan for hits that connect. A Max-HP roster needs enough damage and mobility. The official guide’s balance warning is especially important because one impressive number can hide a structural weakness.
Treat the Relic pool as part of the combo
A synergy that requires one dedicated Relic is also a probability problem. Posting each roster Flyer introduces that Type’s seven Relics and its Family set. Adding unrelated Families early makes the required result less frequent. Delay optional Flyers when the build cannot function without its first key piece.
Once the engine is online, a wider pool may become an advantage. Additional Families can introduce team-wide effects, protection, or economy that cover weaknesses. The timing matters: narrow while searching for the essential enabler, broad when the roster can convert many results.
Ensemble Mode offers direct control over how many Flyers are pre-posted. The developer guide explains that leaving slots open keeps the initial pool smaller, while unfilled positions receive random Flyer selection during the run. That makes Ensemble useful for testing whether a synergy depends on early pool concentration.
Distinguish an engine from a pile of payoffs
An engine contains a repeatable source, a conversion, and a useful result. Hacker Dude generates Exploits on a timer and consumes them through attacks; Crit-oriented support can change how rapidly related effects develop when the current Relics explicitly connect those events. Wizard’s timed Fireballs can become a movement-and-area engine when Relics add casts or benefits around movement.
A pile of payoffs has many impressive “when” clauses but no reliable event to activate them. Count how often the source happens in an ordinary battle. If a trigger occurs once while another option fires every few seconds, the larger written number may contribute less.
Also locate cooldowns and target caps. A team can create an event more rapidly than a Relic is allowed to respond. Once a global or per-Type cooldown is saturated, more trigger frequency should be directed toward another conversion.
Test a synergy with a controlled run
Write a single prediction before the battle. Examples: “General will command Knight because Knight is directly below,” “raising Ninja Crit Chance will create more Shurikens,” or “a narrower opening pool will make the dedicated Relic appear more often across repeated attempts.”
Change only the relevant order, Stat, or Flyer plan. Observe the named event in the battle and the corresponding tooltip, counter, animation, or result. Repeat enough times to avoid treating one random success as certainty. Record the Tier and the current full-release scope.
When the chain fails, find the broken link. The source may not fire, the target may be wrong, the event may use a different defined term, the recipient may be unconscious, or a cooldown may suppress the conversion. Fix that link instead of adding unrelated power.
Synergy claims that need caution
Do not publish a “best team” from a Demo-era thread as a current base-game conclusion. The full release expanded and reworked the roster, and the public base game has no stated semantic version. Do not call a five-Family team automatically superior or inferior; its larger Relic pool changes consistency and option breadth.
Likewise, a synergy that reaches one round in one Tier is not proof of every progression target. State the roster, order, required Relics, Trinkets, Tier, boss, and date.
