A build in How Many Dudes? is the complete system that turns recruitment choices into repeatable battle results. It includes the roster Types, their order, Abilities, Stats, Relics, bound Trinkets, cash plan, consumables, and the target the run is trying to beat. A list of five names is only a roster; it becomes a build when you can explain how its triggers feed one another and what failure it is designed to survive.

The developer’s full-release guide rejects the idea that a Dude is inherently weak when ignored. Types become strong through appropriate Relics, Stats, teammates, and Trinkets. That makes build planning less about copying a universal tier list and more about creating conditions where each selected Type can perform its intended job.

Start with an outcome, not a character list

Name the run’s immediate target. A first Tier 1 Gold-Star attempt needs enough survival and mobility to handle the G.O.A.T. A collection run may need a particular Type to reach the boss. A Relic experiment may need a narrow early pool. A deep run may value economy and flexible answers more than a quick early spike.

Then describe the current loss. If one attack removes a key Type, the build lacks guaranteed effective health or rescue. If enemies remain alive while the roster survives, damage or target access is insufficient. If the correct Relic never appears, the pool may be too broad. If the team reaches the boss broke and short-handed, cash and recovery choices are consuming the plan.

This diagnosis prevents the common mistake of adding “more strength” without defining it. More healing does not prevent a one-shot. More Attack Power does not help a Type that cannot reach its target. A new Family may contain an excellent effect while also making the one required Dude Relic harder to find.

Cover pressure, recovery, and finishing

Pressure management includes Max HP, Toughness, Temporary Health, Block, Deflection, Taunt, Evasion, damage transfer, enemy debuffs, forced movement, and fatal-damage protection. Choose mechanisms whose triggers happen reliably. A Taunt Type without durability may concentrate danger and collapse; durability without a way to draw pressure may protect the wrong part of the roster.

Recovery should match the damage pattern. Cleric’s area pulse, Medic’s damage-driven Triage, Explorer’s limited Canteen, Ghost’s Equalization, Frankendude’s donation, and Mutant’s stored Floofballs behave differently. Spread damage, a single endangered Type, and damage arriving faster than healing each require a different response.

Finishing power is more than raw Attack Power. Ninja wants Direct Crits to throw Shurikens. Wizard casts area Fireballs on a timer. Mummy stores Doom. Samurai Dashes toward the lowest-HP enemy. Ranger can reach distant enemies through Magic Arrows. The build must supply the Stat, trigger, and access pattern that lets its chosen finisher work.

Build Stat chains that serve multiple Types

A Stat becomes especially valuable when it improves several important events. Crit Chance can raise ordinary damage while also enabling Abilities or Relics triggered by Direct Crits. Max HP can increase survival and strengthen effects calculated from a Dude’s health. Toughness can protect a Taunting Type and preserve a healer long enough to stabilize the rest of the team.

Avoid forcing the entire roster into one Stat when some Types barely use it. The official guide warns that an all-Evasion direction can leave damage weak or make the roster fragile when a major hit is not evaded. A focused Stat package is useful only if the team still covers the outcomes that Stat cannot guarantee.

Read the current Dudex descriptions before committing. Electrician is highlighted by the developer as a Type that wants Attack Power and Run Speed and can lose some need for Attack Speed after its Relics develop. Pirate’s Taunt pattern benefits from Evasion and Crit Chance. Knight primarily wants Toughness and Max HP. Those distinctions are the raw material of a coherent Stat chain.

Control the Relic pool deliberately

Every posted roster Flyer adds seven dedicated Dude Relics and the Type’s Family set to the pool, according to the official guide. Each Family contributes eight Relics, and a Family set is added only once even when several Types from that Family are posted. A concentrated Family roster therefore has a different ratio of Dude to Family options than a five-Family roster.

This creates a real build tradeoff. A narrow pool is better when one dedicated Relic unlocks the plan. A broad pool is better when the roster can convert many Family effects and has enough economy or rerolls to sift through them. Diversity is not automatically synergy, and concentration is not automatically consistency; the desired result determines which pool is healthy.

Pre-posted Flyers make this choice earlier. Daily Dude and Rematch pre-post all five, while Ensemble lets the player decide how many available slots to fill. The developer guide suggests partial Ensemble posting as a way to begin with a smaller pool when one Type urgently needs a dedicated Relic.

Use roster order as a zero-cost build tool

Alien Dude targets the Dude Type immediately above it. General Dude commands the Type immediately below it. Other effects can refer to the first or last roster Type, or choose the healthiest or most-injured member. Reordering changes these connections without spending cash or replacing a Relic.

Draw the intended edge in plain language: “Alien moves Samurai toward the lowest-HP enemy,” or “General commands the protector below it to Taunt.” Place the Types, open both Ability cards, and watch the first trigger. If the wrong Type moves or receives the command, fix the order before changing the roster.

Order also affects safety. A Type intended to accept damage should not accidentally occupy a positional bonus meant for the carry. A health-transfer chain can behave unexpectedly if the healthiest or most-injured member changes. Revisit order after a Trinket or Relic substantially changes one Type’s durability.

Economy is part of every long build

Cash determines how many Relics and consumables the roster can access. The developer guide describes investment through Business Dude as a path to compounding money and warns that excessive Dude Juice spending can consume funds needed later. A build that works only when every shop purchase is affordable needs an explicit economy engine.

Track avoidable spending. Let Dudes recover naturally when the remaining roster can win safely. Buy a consumable for a known threat rather than vague reassurance. If a particular Relic is mandatory, preserve rerolls or cash for the window where it can appear. If the roster is flexible, saving may be stronger than forcing a mediocre purchase.

Economy also affects risk selection. More cash can increase the set of Relics owned before the endgame, but a lost battle can erase the value of future purchasing power. Take the harder reward only when the current build answers its enemy pattern.

Prepare the build for bosses before they arrive

The official beginner guide identifies the Tier 1 G.O.A.T. at round 105 as a test of surviving major hits and maintaining enough mobility to engage it. A roster that dominates ordinary waves can still fail if it has no answer to those mechanics. Reserve at least one layer of guaranteed survival and one way to reach or redirect targets.

Higher Tiers introduce different endgame bosses and constraints. Do not reuse a Tier 1 success as proof that the build is universally solved. Observe which mechanic ended the attempt, then adjust the corresponding part of the system: roster, order, Relic priority, Stat mix, Trinket assignment, or consumable reserve.

Community build reports can inspire tests, but they need a Tier, date, branch, roster, and objective. Demo-era round claims are not full-release evidence. This hub intentionally avoids a fixed ranking while the public full-release version has no stated semantic label.

A practical build record

For a reproducible run, write down the five roster Types and their order, Families opened, key Ability triggers, dedicated Relics required, important team-wide Stats, Trinket bindings, economy source, target Tier and boss, and the cause of failure or success. That record explains why the build worked and makes later balance changes visible.
